This site has been set up by me for no other reason than to allow me to explore and share my interest in the diverse history of the railways in the United Kingdom. Here I will talk about the more unusual aspects of the railways, diverse routes, or curiosities that I come across during my study of them. During my time working on this site, I will blog on the different subjects I am studying at that time, putting my thoughts, problems, and solutions on here for you to read and comment on. it will give you the chance to see the development that has occurred, and eventually the result of my endeavours to unlock the mysteries that I come across. 

To introduce me. I am John and have been interested in the railways for probably about forty years, although up until a few years ago it was just light reading on the subject, and an interest is seeing preserved rail lines. we all must start somewhere. Over the last few years, probably nearly a decade, my interest in the actual history has grown, and since starting my degrees four years ago it became something I felt I could take further in my life, hence this site. My first work into the history of the railways was my dissertation, working on the Ffestiniog Railway and exploring why it would last as long as it did as an independent company, sparked a desire to take my interest to this level.

The site is set up very simply, the obvious home page, where you are now. There is the about part speaks for itself. there is the blog which is basically my ramblings as I progress through a project, the successes, and the problems and how I got round them. lastly there is the unusual railway routes. this will be any routes that I come across, very brief history on the line and the more on the reason I find it interesting or unusual. these last two parts will be continuously updated as I go through. eventually leading to a diverse collection of reading material for the site visitor.
